infant mortality because the doctors may not be able to figure out what caused the situation to

occur. When tracking infant mortality rates, it can help to keep track of certain data that is

obtained from each case. According to the CDC (2023), birth defects can be fatal, or they can be

manageable. Most birth defects are caused by the mother having health issues, drug use, and or

alcohol consumption while pregnant. Using drugs or drinking alcohol while pregnant can result

in the infant’s lungs, heart, and development being delayed, which is one of the reasons why

infant mortality is more common.

One of the leading causes of infant mortality is preterm birth. A preterm birth is when the

infant is born after 37 weeks before full gestation. This can lead to complications such as lung

issues, feeding issues, and weight issues. More complications could happen that are more severe,

such as developmental issues, vision issues/vision loss, and hearing issues/loss. The infant can

also be born with disorders such as cerebral palsy and possibly death. These parents and children
