Sigmund Freud is “the [biggest] influence of psychoanalysis on the profession of coun-
seling and psychotherapy has been enormous”(Murdock, 2017). Freud begin his career as a
physician in neurology but is also known for many theory that has changed over his life of 83
years. The popular theory regarding the unconscious mind and the belief that it controls people's
behaviors to get their desires. His insight and influence in counseling are uncanny. Freud’s psy-
choanalytic theory is a method that has been utilized throughout history as a starting point for
countless new theories. In fact, it is currently being utilized in counseling still today (Murdock,
2017).
Here we will explore Freud’s theories through threw application of a case study. With an
attempt to address his counseling theory and demonstrate understanding. Through the application
of Freud's theories, the desired outcome is the client’s mental health symptoms will decrease.
The first rule of all mental health counseling is to do no harm (ACA, 2014).


CNL-500 Case Study Analysis (Option 6)
The client is Samantha an 11-year-old female, who has begun to withdraw from social
activities and engagements with friends. There has been a decrease in classroom participation in
grades. With mood scene swings and signs of depression. Which all seem to be occurring be-
cause of Samantha's mother and father's divorce. The case study outlines that Samantha blames
herself for the separation. She believes that if she was a better child, it would be staying together.
This caused Samantha to show signs of self-harm and suicidal ideology.


Counseling Goals and Intervention Strategies
Freud's psychoanalytic theory outlines three main sections of the mind, the id, superego,
and ego. These different components control the exchanges between the subconscious in human
physical behaviors. Bodily demands and essential functions as well as satisfaction are controlled
in the instant part of the brain known as the id. This all occurs outside of conscious thought and
subconscious thought (Murdock, 2017).
The superego is easily described as the "Jiminy cricket" of the brain. Meaning, this is the
part of the brain that deciphers right from wrong and acts as the conscience to guide choices that
are moral and follow social constructs of acceptable behavior. This part of the brain develops
