two different past tenses and they are used differently
depending on context
★ They can also be used in the same sentence
★ These notes will summarize when to use the preterite and
when to use the imperfect

★ When to use the Preterite
★ To talk about completed, non-specific repeating, actions (ex: Yo morí.
Yo hablé. Yo caminé. Yo hice mi tarea)
★ To talk about actions within a time frame (ex: Ayer, yo puse la
camisa)
★ To mention an action that disrupted an ongoing action
(ex: Ella Hacía su tarea cuando yo toqué la puerta)


★ When to use the Imperfect
★ To talk about repeating actions (ex: Cada verano, nosotros
íbamos a la playa )
★ To talk about actions without a VERY defined time frame/vague time period
(ex: Cuando era niño, yo vivía con mis primos)
(ex: A las doce de la tarde, yo viví con mis primos)
★ To mention an ongoing action (ex: Ella Hacía su tarea cuando yo
toqué la puerta)
