These notes will help Spanish students understand the differences between the preterite and imperfect, know what conditions either tense is used, and even learn shortcuts to identifying when to use either tense
Preterite vs Imperfect
(we don't cover conjugations for the preterite or imperfect here)
★ The Spanish language has a problem with the past; it has
two different past tenses and they are used differently
depending on context
★ They can also be used in the same sentence
★ These notes will summarize when to use the preterite and
when to use the imperfect
★ When to use the Preterite
★ To talk about completed, non-specific repeating, actions (ex: Yo morí.
Yo hablé. Yo caminé. Yo hice mi tarea)
★ To talk about actions within a time frame (ex: Ayer, yo puse la
camisa)
★ To mention an action that disrupted an ongoing action
(ex: Ella Hacía su tarea cuando yo toqué la puerta)
★ When to use the Imperfect
★ To talk about repeating actions (ex: Cada verano, nosotros
íbamos a la playa )
★ To talk about actions without a VERY defined time frame/vague time period
(ex: Cuando era niño, yo vivía con mis primos)
(ex: A las doce de la tarde, yo viví con mis primos)
★ To mention an ongoing action (ex: Ella Hacía su tarea cuando yo
toqué la puerta)
*Note that desires, feelings, thoughts, weather, time, age, physical descriptions and
states of being use the Imperfect*
