Siddhartha who was a member of the Gautama clan
Why did Siddhartha Gautama's father attempt to shelter him from the
sights of human misery? - ANSWER - The birth of Gautama was
surrounded by extraordinary events and portents and a soothsayer
predicted that he would become a great king or a great Buddha
(enlightened one)
- When it was predicted he would be a great king, but only if he did not
see human misery or the tranquillity of a monk. So his father tried to
keep him from the world.
What was Gautama's childhood like? - ANSWER - His mother died
soon after birth and he was reared by his maternal aunt who became his
father's second wife
- He was sheltered from 4 things (dead body, aged person, diseased
person, and an ascetic monk)
- Grew up surrounded by youth, beauty and wealth
- Recived education in philosophy
- Age 19 he married his cousin and has 1 son Rahula
How did life change for Gautama around age 30? - ANSWER - He
gradually became aware of the ugliness of the world
- He saw an old person, a diseased person, rotten corpse, and a
peaceful monk
- When he entered his harem room where he was surrounded by women
all he could think is how they would turn old
- He could no longer stand to live in his palace so he stuck into his wifes
room and said goodbye to his infant son and took off on his horse into
the night
Gautama abandoned his wife and child and left the palace. In what two
ways did he first seek enlightenment? - ANSWER - He clipped off his
hair and beard and sent his horse back to the palace
, - He exchanged clothes with a beggar and began searching for answers
to lifes miseries

so he attached himself to a guru and studied but received no answers
- 2. He tried asceticism (avoiding pleasures of life). He joined 5 monks
and began a life od severe asceticism that lasted 6 years. He would
seek out anything that was unpleasant and painful in order to find a
solution. (fasted to the point would only eat 1 grain of rice a day and was
so skinny his stomach touched his back bone). Dispite efforts still did not
find enlightment.
How and where did Gautama become Buddha (enlightened one)? -
ANSWER - When he was walking near a stream due to being weak
from asceticism he fainted and fell into the river but the cold water
revived him
- He then walked to a nearby food stand and eat his first meal as the 5
monks saw him do this he was labed as a trator
- Afterward he went back the river and sat under a tree and mediated in
which he was finally enlighted and known as Buddha
- In his mediation he received an image of the endless cycle of birth and
death and people are bound to this cycle because of desire which
causes karma and fetters people
- He found enlightenment when he no longer wanted it
Who were the Sangha? - ANSWER - The Buddhist community
- After Buddha found enlightenment and went back to the 5 monks that
no longer liked him and explained to them how he received enlightment
- The monks noticed a change in him and accepted his teachings and
became the first sangha
Did Buddha think women could become "enlightened" and reach
Nirvana? - ANSWER - Unlike other religions he taught that ant person
of any caste or sex could reach enlightment
- When woman first asked to joung his group he was at first reluctant but
then allowed them form an order of nuns (which included his wife and
stepmother)
