,History of PA profession

So the PA profession was created in the 1965s by a doctor Eugene Stead from Duke Uni when there was

a shortage of physicians.

The first class of PA students were at Duke univeristy, consisting of 4 navy corpsmen who were trained by

a fask track cirriculum that was modeled after WW2 doctors

They finally graduated 2 years later in 1967 and since then, the PA profession has expanded where there

was standards and regulations in place for profession.

Now, there is more than 250 accreddiated PA programs.

Why PA?

- sell urself

-list ur qualities

As a child of immigrant parents, I had to break down medical words and phrases that best fit my parent's

lvl of understanding b/c they didn't know a lot of english.

However, I realized not everyone has their own personal advocate to explain health concepts to them.

When I was a COPE health scholar, I interned in the underserved area of LB where I saw how the lack of

health literacy negatively affected their health outcome. It led to less compliancy and less follow up

visits. However, I wasn't able to address this gap because of my scope as an intern where the most I was

, able to do was measure vital signs or feed a patient.

Fortunately, I was able to witness the impact that PA's had on health literacy when I shadowed Gretchen,

an ED PA.

When she came across a challenging case of eye pain, I watched her as she collaborated with her patient

care team of nurses and doctors after performing various exams and assessments with the patient. After

concluding to a diagnosis, Gretchen discussed the treatment with her patient where she left no room for

confusion or questions.

Overall, I wish to become a PA because I want to address health literacy by spending more time with my

patients and breaking down their health concepts to them, similar to Gretchen with her patient and

similar to my expeience with my mother. By doing so, I can provide more access of care and advocate for

their partipcation in their own health. Additionally, I want to work inan inter professional collaobrtive

environment where I can work with different health professions to enhance my skills and knowlesge for

the beenfit of my patients and for myself whenever I come across challenging medical conditions.

What makes you unique / good candidate / what can you bring? / what sets you apart? / what makes

you diverse?/ what would our class be missing?

MISSION : collaborative, evidence-based medicine and advocate for patients and their communities.
