Dear Student

We, once more, welcome you to the Transformative Counselling Encounters module.

In this tutorial letter, we provide you with feedback on Assignment 01 and guide you on how it was
evaluated.

We have received feedback that students are enjoying Transformative Counselling Encounters module.
We have also received comments from students that they are already deriving benefit from interacting
with the experiential activities and assignments in the module and are looking forward to applying some
of the newly acquired skills and principles in their everyday lives. The following messages from some of
our current and previous students attest to this:

“…The module is such an inspiration to me! Your activities are great and indeed very useful in my
life.”

“…Thank you for the awesome module you create, Transformative Counselling Encounters, which I
found to be a refreshing take on learning with regards to the concepts explained.

“…I have loved this entire module, and the practical aspect within the assignment portion, has
permanently added to my own set of skills”.

We hope that all of you have had an enriching experience studying this module thus far.

There are a few matters that this tutorial letter aims to cover, namely, to:

1. Discuss the tasks and activities/reflective journal.
2. Guidelines how to use the study notes and the study guide.
3. Provide feedback on Assignment 01.

Activities in study guide and the reflective journal

There are activities in each unit of the study guide. These include questions to think about, self-tests,
exercises to do, and drawings to interpret. They are designed to help you to draw out important ideas
and main points. Occasionally, they are designed to test how carefully you have worked through the
material. We strongly urge you to complete these activities, since they are an important aid to helping
you understand the texts you will be studying but no marks will be allocated. Activities in the study guide
for example 3.2 is not compulsory. The required reading material for this course is contained within the
study guide itself. Introductions, comments and activities have been included to direct your reading of the
primary and secondary literature

If you like, you can start a discussion forum at any time on myUnisa for example for activity 3.2. Only
when a post is starting the discussion will be displayed. Students can then start a new discussion topic in
the forum or reply to any message in an ongoing discussion topic, but no marks will be allocated - it is
self-assessment.

You have been asked to keep a reflective journal in which you record the activities which you have done
and where you keep notes on your progress (what you have experienced and learnt as you performed
the tasks and activities). The reflective journal is meant to be another source of acquiring better
understanding of the principles of counselling and taking stock of what you can bring into the counselling
process by critically thinking about your role as an emerging professional. It is meant to help you to
derive more meaningful experiences with your learning material. The activities and practical assignment
brought you into contact with diverse others. Your interactions and experiences with them become more
meaningful, gain greater depth and become more real to you, if you record them. It is like having a
thought-stimulating conversation with yourself. Things become clearer to you, you realise certain things,
understand something better, if you take the time to actively think about it. Putting thoughts and feelings,

impressions and observations on paper, is a most powerful way of gaining a better understanding of
yourself and others. You begin to gain a fundamental grasp of what it means to establish good
relationships with others. You also become more proficient in breaking down the barriers that cause
misunderstanding, tension and conflict between people. As this happens, our module begins to achieve
its aims! Although we would have loved to take the time to read through your reflective journal, it proves
practically daunting to require you to submit the reflective journal in addition to the two assignments that
you are required to submit. Therefore, you will not be required to submit your reflective journal for
assessment. We do hope, though, that you diligently kept working on the activities meant for your
reflective journal and make entries into your journals as you continue working through the module.

How to use the study notes and the study guide

As a student in this module, you are given an excellent opportunity to develop not just your study skills,
but also many other skills useful in life. These skills will help you to succeed in challenging tasks after
graduation. We hope that the following information will help you to get an understanding how to
approach this module.

This is a third-year module and counselling concepts are addressed.

This study guide (PYC3705) contains the learning units that will guide you through the study material.

In the learning units, you will come across the following:

• Explore.
• Reflective questions.
• Activities.
• Reviewing and connecting the dots.
• Resources for further reading.

To achieve maximum benefit from your engagement with the course, we suggest that you become fully
and actively involved with the activities and questions as illustrated in the study units.

The READER and DVDs provide additional reading and information.

Much has been written about the theory and practice of counselling from various perspectives and
disciplines. In the READER, we have included articles and material that were chosen to enrich your
learning process. As said, the READER provides additional reading and information. You do not have to
study it for the exam. The DVDs are additional to give students practical skills in counselling encounters.

In order to answer the assignment questions and to prepare for the exam in general, it is important to
have a thorough understanding of the following:

1. Checking-in and contracting.
2. Assessing a client in a counselling setting.
3. Micro-skills of counselling.
4. Termination of a counselling session.
5. The ethical and professional foundations for culture-centered counselling.
6. Ethical approaches.
7. Factors about self-disclosure.
8. Lay counsellors and other non-professionals.
9. Core competencies of registered counsellors/psychologists and scope of practice and
intersectoral collaboration.

Study Notes will guide you through the themes and are an invaluable guide in preparing for
examinations. They include useful information and outline of the important concepts and themes in
transformative counselling encounters. Therefore, the study notes are compiled to keep you on track. It
is required from you to demonstrate knowledge of these concepts. All these concepts are explained in
