Los medios de comunicacion en Espana

La television

Television is the most-consumed media in Spain, with almost 100% of Spaniards having a
TV and consuming more than 4 daily hours of TV- up to 6 during the pandemic. TV has
undeniable benefits and drawbacks;

• It can give families an opportunity to discuss and spend time together,
• During the pandemic the government could broadcast news, education and advice,
• It was a way to escape from reality,
• After the dictatorship, Adolfo Suarez, President of the Government in 1976, used it
to encourage a peaceful transition to the democracy,
• During the dictatorship, and more recently in other latin american countries, it was
used to transmit political propaganda,
• It can normalise violence (with around 90 scenes of violence daily) and drugs and
alcohol. As a result, drink driving is the most common cause of death for young
people in traffic accidents,
• It can send erroneous messages about sexuality, resulting in an increase in STDs
and underage pregnancies.
The most common type of TV (75%) is “telerrealidad”, followed by talent shows and
football; although the favourite genre of Spaniards is series, “telerrealidad” costs far less
to produce. Thus, if the watcher can’t afford Netflix, they have no other choice than to
watch “telerrealidad”. “Telerrealidad” uses “sensacionalismo” to hold attention, with
dramatic, pathetic, or invasive situations.

“Telerrealidad” can also be defined as “telebasura”; not only is it a waste of time, but it
creates celebrities out of talentless people who are bad role models, invades the privacy of
others, uses vulgar language, and spreads false rumours and information.
