Exam Questions And Answers

CNO mission - ANS regulating n nursing in the public interest

the CNO does this by
- establishing requirements for entry to practice.
- articulating and promoting practice standards
- administering quality assurance program
- enforcing standards of practice and conduct

self regulation & quality assurance - ANS - nursing is a self-regulated profession and, as
such, is accountable for ensuring quality assurance programs are in place
- this is a requirement outlines by the RHPA< Nursing Act, and subsequently the College of
Nurses of Ontario (CNO)

AS the regulatory body for nurses, the CNO requires all nurses to participate in the Quality
ASSuracne program, which is comprised of 2 main components:
- practice reflection
- learning plan

CNO quality assurance program -> self assessment - ANS part a: reflect on your practice
part b:
step 1: Identify gaps in your practice for continued learning
step 2: develop learning goals
step 3: Link goals to CNOs Code of Conduct
step 4: Identify and complete your learning activities
step 5: Reflect on your plan and evaluate changes to your practice

CNO - Quality Assurance - ANS - The purpose of the Quality Assurance (QA) Program is
to assure the public that nurses demonstrate their commitment to continuing competence and
continuing quality improvement. The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) does this by assessing
the knowledge, skill and judgment of members.
- Support nurses in practicing according to the College's standards of practice
- Help nurses develop the practice areas in which they have identified learning needs
- Increase the public's confidence in the nursing profession
- http://www.cno.org/en/myqa/

, CNO and Lifelong Learning - ANS - The College's QA (Quality Assurance) Program is
based on the principle that lifelong learning is essential to continuing competence
- Nurses in every setting demonstrate their commitment to continually improving their nursing
practice by engaging in practice reflection, and by setting and achieving learning goals
- Every nurse registered in the General or Extended classes is required by law to participate in
QA

Why is Continuing Competence Important? - ANS - Clients Safety
- contributes to quality nursing practice -can identify areas fro improvement
- Encourages the use of current, high quality evidence/information in practice
- It is part of being an accountable professional
- Maintains the public's confidence in the nursing profession

CNO perspective - ANS - "Nurses maintain and enhance their competence through daily
practice reflection, lifelong learning and by integrating that learning into their practice. As
practicing nurses, QA is integral in ensuring the public receives safe, quality and ethical care."
(CNO, 2020)
- Learning plans integrate each aspect of these CNO competency requirements to contribute to
safe, quality, and ethical patient care:
- reflection
- lifelong learning
- application to practice

BScN Program Perspectives - ANS - Facilitates self-directed learning in alignment with
course requirements
- Provides opportunity for feedback from peers, staff, tutors and others
- Links multiple learning contexts together for application in the professional practice setting
- Dynamic and adjust with the needs of the learner

Why self-directed learning? - ANS - Evidence that people who take the initiative in learning
(proactive learners) learn more things, and learn better, than people who sit passively waiting to
be taught.
- Therefore, the main purpose of education must be to develop the skills of inquiry.

Why lifelong learning? - ANS - Learning acquired at the age of 20 may be obsolete by the
time a person is 30
- When a person leaves formal schooling they must not only have a foundation of knowledge
acquired but more importantly, have the ability to go on acquiring new knowledge easily and
skillfully the rest of their life

A learning plan describes: - ANS - what a student will learn
- how this will be accomplished
- timeline
- evidence of learning
