Anatomy Concept 2: Homeostasis and

Regulation Study Guide Solutions

1. Differentiate between dynamic and static equilibrium. - ANSWER✔✔-Dynamic equilibrium is a

position where the rate of reactants turning into products and the rate of products turning into reactants

are similar or equal whereas static equilibrium is a point where the reaction has come to a halt; here, the

reactants no longer turn into products nor the products turn into reactants.

2. Describe the relationship between response to stimuli and homeostasis. - ANSWER✔✔-Your body

responds to stimuli (heat, light, etc.) to maintain homeostasis. When stimuli interrupts homeostasis,

positive or negative feedback occur to restore equilibrium throughout the body.

3. Differentiate between positive and negative feedback loops. Include an example of each. -

ANSWER✔✔-Positive feedback loops amplify the initiating stimulus, moving the system away from its

equilibrium whereas the negative feedback loops counteract the changes of the system, maintaining

them in a set point.

Positive feedback loop- Childbirth

Negative Feedback Loop-Human Body Temperature

4 Draw an example of a feedback loop, clearly labeling all parts. - ANSWER✔✔-

5. Summarize the role of enzymes in the regulation of homeostasis. - ANSWER✔✔-Enzymes act as

catalysts that speedup the process of regulating homeostasis. The activity of the particular enzyme

(typically a protein) can be regulated and the final product that is made control the rest of the process.

6. Summarize the role of cellular transport in the regulation of homeostasis. - ANSWER✔✔-Transport

(can be passive or active) helps regulate homeostasis by sending signals and transporting mechanisms.

7. Describe the 6 types of cellular transport, including an example of a substance transported of each. -

ANSWER✔✔-Passive:

Simple diffusion- spreading out of molecules across membrane until equilibrium is released (O2

molecules)

Facilitated Diffusion- Transport proteins-acts to help (facilitate) the diffusion of molecules that normally

couldn't pass through the cell membrane (large molecules and polar molecules)

Osmosis-Simple diffusion of water across the cell membrane; water moves from high concentration to

low concentration

Active:

Molecular pumps- cell uses energy to pump molecules across the membrane, against the gradient,

through a protein channel (Sodium/Potassium)

Endocytosis-uses vesicles to move large particles into the cell (white blood cells engulf bacteria to fight

infection)

Exocytosis-uses vesicles to export materials out of the cell (nerve cells secrete neurotransmitters to send

signals throughout the body)
