Ratios and Proportions Answer: learning objectives: What is a ratio? What is a
proportion? Solving for x
A Ratio Answer: A way of demonstrating the relationship between 2
numbers.
Ratio examples in vet med Answer: Think of an antibiotic tablet that's labeled
as 100mg. This implies that one tablet contains 100mg of active ingredient. Can
be expressed as:
1 tablet:100mg or 100mg:1 tablet
Can also express ratio as a fraction: 1 tablet/100mg or 100mg/1 tablet.
Mg/mL example Answer: Concentration of liquid medications often
expressed as a ratio. Propofol comes in a concentration of 10 milligrams per
millilitre and would appear as 10mg/mL (10mg per 1 mL).
What is a proportion? Answer: Relationship between 2 ratios. In a true
proportion, the 2 ratios are equal. Using 100mg tablets, we can say if 1 tablet
contains 100mg, then 2 tablets contain 200mg. We can express this as:
1 tab:100mg=2 tabs:200mg or 1 tab/100mg = 2 tabs/200mg.
Fraction method of proportion Answer: 1 tab/100mg=2 tabs/200mg. Fraction
method of proprtions is most commonly used to express ratios and proportions.

When setting up a ratio and proportion Answer: must ensure order of the
ratio on one side of the equal side is the same as on the other side.
1 tab/100mg=2 tabs/200mg.
In statement above, tabs are on top of the ratio and mg on the bottom. We
cannot put tabs on top on one side and on the bottom on the other side and
expect both sides of the equation to be equal.
ex: 1 tab/1ommg does not = 200mg/2 tablets.
Remember Answer: TO pay close attention to the equal sign. One side of the
equation must equal the other side. Think of 1/2 and 2/4 - the numbers are
different but the value is the same.
Using ratio and proportion to solve for x Answer: If 3 values of the statement
are supplied, we can find the relationship to determine 4th value. Consider the
question "If each tablet contains 100mg, how many mg do 2 tablets contain?"
Set up the ratio and proportion statement:
1 tab/100mg = 2 tab/x mg
In a true proportion, the products of cross multiplication are therefore equal:
(1 tab)(x mg) = (2 tabs)(100mg)
whatever you do to one side of the equation must be done to the other side.
Can also cancel units Answer: can cancel units that appear in the numerator
and denominator;
