Discuss security zones and factors that effect zone size/location -
answer Security zones are used in High Value Assets (HVA's).
Tactical boats used to protect moving and stationary HVA's. Range
from military/commercial vessels to important shore side facilities.
Security zones established to provide protection to HVAs and to
control civilian/commercial traffic in area. DOD has authority outside
of US, USCG has authority in US.
3 types
Reaction , Intercept and Assessment Zone
Define Reaction Zone - answer Ideally extends at least 1,000
yrds/meters from HVA. Where unidentified or potentially hostile
contacts are engaged w/increased levels of force until they retreat
or no longer a threat, potential threats not allowed to approach
HVA. Traffic kept in positive control . Actual distance for this zone
based on FPCON. Attempt to penetrate reactoine zone, after being
warned, could constitute hostile intent
Define Intercept Zone - answer Ideally extends 1000 yards/meters
from outer bounder of reaction zone away from HVA. Established to
increase time to react to threat. Screening Vessels (SVs) patrol and
intercept Contacts of Intrest (COIs), Traffic is controlled, Actual
distance from zone based on FPCON
Define Assessment Zone - answer Outermost security zone for HVA
protection, reaches organic and inorganic sensors. integrated into
overall defensive sea area force protection plan. Security forces
detect and identify COIs as they approach or pass near intercept
, zone but do not patrol distant assessment zone unless their track
approaches zone. Establishing authorities will specify procedures
and limits of assessment zones in appropriate OPORDs
Discuss factors in determining navigability of waterways: Currents ,
Depth of waterways, Water Levels - answer Currents - effect on fuel
consumption, speed, anchoign, craft orientation, tactical ops.
Depths - Affect route selection and speed of advance
Water levels - Levels on lake/river will seldom fall below chart datum
elevation and only rarely will there be less depth available than
what is portrayed on chart. Not always true, riverine forces must
posses up to date navigation charts and know how water levels
compare to chart datum wherever they operate
Discuss factor in determine navigability of waterways : Natural
Obstacles, Man made obstacles - answer Natural : Include, floating
debris, rapids/whirlpools, branches and limbs, stumps and roots
affect speed and course of vessel and can cause significant damage
Man made: Numerous and range in complexity, enemy can place
obstacles designed to damage craft or foul propellers just below
surface to avoid detection, if possible aircraft should conduct aerial
visual/electro-optical recon of intended route at both low/high tide
to locate obstacles as well as other danger areas
Define Guard Mount - answer Standardized watch turnover between
on coming and off going watch personnel. Supervisor must be
thoroughly familiar w/ all matters
Define SMEAC - answer Situation - Details on friendly and enemy
personnel operating in your area of operations
