you consider to be the tone of your chosen story or poem as you discuss the way tone and the message of the
story/poem are connected. Use some text examples to support your response. At the end of your initial post,
please pose a question regarding the tone and message of the story to your classmates.

Response:

In Maya Angelou’s poem, Still I Rise, she sets the tone immediately with this opening stanza:
“You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.” (Angelou, 1978)

Angelou addresses her oppressor, letting them know that no matter what they do to her or say
about her, she will always overcome. Her attitude is optimistic.

Angelou uses the tone in this poem to impress upon the reader. She wants the reader to
understand what she has been through, and she did not let her life’s misfortunes bring her down
or dampen her spirits. This poem was written from within her soul. The ways she uses imagery
so that the reader feels emotion from the words are beautiful:

“You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.” (Angelou, 1978)

In those four lines, Angelou paints a picture of emotion in the reader’s mind, empathy. Everyone
can relate to what this stanza says. No matter what someone says about her, no matter how much
they look at her and roll their eyes or hate her more than anything in this world, just as naturally
as air rises, so will she. She does not let anyone steal her joy. In this poem, Maya Angelou refers
to the time of racial conflict. In the very beginning of this poem (quoted above), she lets the
reader know she is referring to “history” and “You may trod me in the very dirt” (Angelou,
19778) refers to the degradation that happened so many times and continues today.
