Film Review
Professor Talbot
The movie I will be reviewing is Disney's Zootopia. The main messages that can be
concluded from Zootopia are important life lessons; do not judge a book by its cover and do not
let people come in the way of following your dreams. The movie promotes the messages of not
judging a book by its cover and following your dreams through Judy Hopps' perseverance and
her use her character as a role model for the audience.
Zootopia's main character is the first bunny cop, Judy Hopps. Judy Hopps is a very
strong, independent and positive role model for the younger audience, especially because of her
past and the circumstances she gets placed in. In movies, these independent characters are seen
as male characters, but Zootopia goes against that stereotype and uses a female to display these
qualities. In the Zootopia Police Department, most of the officers are fierce predators, but Judy is
the one exception once she graduates from the Academy. Throughout Judy's life, the animals that
surround her are telling that she will not be a cop and attempt to crush her dreams. She is picked
on by the larger animals for believing she will be a cop, but this negativity only drove her more
to follow her dream. Since Judy Hopps is a small bunny, she struggles at the academy to fit in or
even pass the required obstacles. These obstacles put in her way make her work harder to achieve
her final goal. With hard work, persistence and determination, Judy Hopps is able to graduate
from the Academy at the head of her class and gets to live her dream of being a cop for the city
of Zootopia. In the film, Zootopia, bunny cop, Judy Hopps, says to an apparent young elephant,
“wanna be an elephant when you grow up, then be an elephant because this is Zootopia ‘anyone
can be anything’” (Zootopia). She encourages others to believe and follow their dreams.
When we were younger, parents and adults were always showing us the proper etiquette
of do not judge a book by its cover. This saying is one that most children hear time and time
again, but the younger audience is able to see a prime example of this being used. In the city of
Zootopia, everyone is well aware of the sly fox, but Judy Hopps is able to develop a friendship
with Nick Wilde, even with her history with foxes. Nick poses as this sly fox character who
scams everyone in the city including Judy Hopps, who later on asks for Nick's help with a case.
After the case starts to unfold, a side of Nick, that no one gets to see, starts to unveil. The do not
judge a book by its cover is something obvious and familiar to an older audience, but is new to
the younger audience. Something these children do understand is that Judy is being nice to Nick
the fox even though the other animals are not.
The main messages that can be concluded from Zootopia are important life lessons; do
not judge a book by its cover and do not let people come in the way of following your dreams.
The movie promotes the messages of not judging a book by its cover and following your dreams
through Judy Hopps' perseverance and her use her character as a role model for the audience.
