UNIT 4 RESEARCH ESSAY
Unit 4 Research Essay

In recent history, August Wilson played one of the most significant roles in the theater,

having his voice heard across the nation with his ten plays in the Pittsburg Cycle. Each play

addresses African American history, and the long-fought battle over the last century to get where

we are today. Each takes a look at a different aspect of this battle, ranging from family matters to

the professional sports industry. Across all ten, a depiction of this road is given for many to

understand how society has grown. The plays - although are not in a specific or chronological

order – have repeat characters at different points in their lives, as well as the parents and children

of these same characters crossing over into the other plays. The plays take place in Pittsburg Hill

District except for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which is in Chicago, and allow for this

connection amongst the plays in an art form theater has never seen before. It almost gives more

feeling to the movement and progression of America in these times. To see children going

through prejudice and, although not chronological, a timeline gives a sense of how everyone was

in it together. Only making the reader that much more intrigued because of the significance of

the lives these characters lived. Austin Wilson sought to show the path African American’s took

in all of his plays in his hometown and showed in Fences how even people of color resented

change.

Frederick Austin Kittel was born in 1945 and grew up in Pittsburg’s Hill District, which

was known for its diversity within its neighborhoods (McCollum, 1999). The road Wilson took

growing up fueled much of his creativity in his plays, as his mother was African American, and

his father was a white German American. Although growing up here influenced much of his

work, he did not get a sincere appreciation for the culture in Pittsburg until he moved to St. Paul,

Minnesota, which in perspective today is more than fifty-percent white (Data USA, 2020).
