Week 9 Assignment Worksheet: Groupthink
Respond to the following prompts:
1. Groupthink does not lead to good decisions. Describe a time when you participated in a group
decision that was not effective. The situation can involve family, work, or a social group.
Your answer: When I was a young teenager, I was in a grouphome for young girls. I didn’t
always make smart decisions either. I can remember one of the girls in the home had got into
a fight with a girl at school. The girls in the home decided they wanted to get together and go
face the girl in her turf. Well what a terrible decision that was. If we didn’t run for our lives I
think we would’ve been beaten to death. We hid behind a building until things seem to die
down. Afterwards we went home and never spoke of it again.
2. Was the problem easily solved, difficult to solve, or not solved at all?
Your answer:
The problem wasn’t easy to solve, but I made sure I didn’t go along with a dumb decision like
that ever again. I felt a lot pressure from them.
3. What characteristics of groupthink were involved?
Your answer:
Invulnerability, stereotyping and pressure.
