Earlier in this course, we learned about socialization and how the way we are raised can affect what we think about ourselves and other people. As a reminder, socialization is the process whereby we acquire the attitudes, values, and behaviors appropriate for our culture. Here is an example: if som...
1. Refer back to the responses your subjects gave last week, specifically responses to question
#8. As a reminder, this question was, “Name two different ways that you were brought up
that you think are different from most other people.”
o Based upon their responses, describe the effect your subjects’ upbringings had on
their attitudes, values, and behaviors.
2. Now consider how you were raised and describe what, if any, effect your upbringing has
had on your attitudes, values, and behaviors.
Name two different ways that you were brought up that you think are different from most other
people. This question was uncomfortable for the subjects as well as myself. Subject one; he had
his Mom raise him as a single parent since he was a baby. His father was barely around. He
looked up to his uncles for a father figure. He saw his Mom struggle raising him, he vowed he
would not do the same to his future children. He is a very respectful young man toward women
because of his Mom. She brought him up well.
Me personally, saw a lot growing up, I was raised by my Mom and Dad (not biologically). My real
Father was in the picture but not as much as my Dad. I watched my parents fight each other, and
use drugs in front of me. I saw things a child should had never experienced, but they were still my
parents and I loved them dearly. Watching my Mom go tru what she went thru, I had made a vow
not to do so too. But guess what, I went exactly thru everything my Mom went thru including using
drugs and having my children taken away from me. After everything was said and done, I turned
my life around and got myself clean and sober. I have now been clean and sober 16 years and
2.5 months. It hasn’t been an easy journey but I appreciate every bit of it. I wouldn’t be where I
am today if I wasn’t grateful for my Higher Power.
A child mimicks what he/she learns at home. They react and behave according to what they
learn. In some instances, it might not be the case.
