CONSIDERATIONS
Indications
-shape of the abdomen, palpating for masses &

-irregular breathing assess vital signs
Assess abdomen in this order: inspection, auscultation, percussion
and palpation.
This prevents pt’s bowel’s being stimulated by percussion or
palpating prior to auscultating

possible outcomes/findings: weakened abdominal muscles-
evidenced by tone loss and/or increase in fat tissue resulting in a
rounder and more protruding abdomen educating patient of procedure and what areas will be
possible distention of the abdomen which could result from weight assessed.
gain, accumulated gas, bowel obstruction, hernias, or other
underlying issues. in women lower abdominal distention can also educate pt of findings, what the causes are and how to treat
signal abnormalities that have to due with the menstrual cycle like or what lifestyle changes pt needs to make to correct or prevent from
ovarian cysts worsening, as well as who to follow up with

complications could include any of the negative findings listed above document findings: BP, HR & rhythm, RR, temp., pulse oximetry, ,
findings from chest assessment, ex- deformities
findings from lung assessment. ex- fluid signaled during
percussion, or adventitious sounds heard during auscultating
findings from abdominal assessment, ex- distention, tenderness,
normal bowel sounds
and educate patient of findings and recommended treatment plan
