, The Right Way to Lead

The first article I read was titled “The Right Way to Lead.” This reading fit into the

empowerment framework because it placed an emphasis on overcoming ineffective leadership,

uncertainties, and emotional outbursts. This article has relevance to me because I serve on the

administrative team at my school. I am always looking for ways to grow in the position I’m in,

so completing this assignment is empowering for me and will also benefit my team from what

I have learned. I am faced with challenging situations daily at my job, so these three articles

hold value to me. This article also displayed my weaknesses or opportunities for growth. This

article discussed design thinking, which is processes and tools for creating products, services,

solutions, and experiences. Design thinking asks employees to continually experience something

they have originally tried to avoid underperformance (Bason & Austin, 2019). This article

highlighted three categories that use design thinking projects to succeed. Those three categories

are leveraging empathy, encouraging divergence, and practicing a new future.

The takeaways I got from this article is that team leaders should push performers to open

up but then be supportive about how they feel afterward. As a leader, I should assist my

performers with getting on the right track and not push back with resistance when confronted

with challenges in existing situations. These are opportunities of growth, rather than being

labeled as a performance issue. As a leader I cannot sit back, I will have to aid the performers

deal with emotions and discomfort that are unavoidable. Leaders must encourage the

performance team to maintain confidence that progress is taking place. But, teams should make

their own discoveries and realize they are in a creative thinking process, not just dictating

management instructions (Bason & Austin, 2019).
