Roles and Responsibilities
A midwifes role is to provide you with the necessary professional care
and services during normal pregnancy and childbirth. You will
provide a mother and her baby with the professional care and services
during the first six weeks after delivery. You will be dealing with
pregnant women requiring professional support and advice. You are
very likely to be the lead health professional and contact for a women,
providing evidence-based information and helping her make informed
choices about the options and services available throughout her
pregnancy.
You will be the expected on childbirth and your responsibilities are likely to be diverse,
you will provide –
Provide Full Antenatal Care, Including Parenting Classes, Clinical Examinations
And Screening.
Identify High-Risk Pregnancies
Monitor Women And Support Them During Labour And The Birthing Process
Teach New And Expectant Mothers How To Feed, Care For And Bathe Their
Babies
You will be working with women from a variety of backgrounds and you will need to be
confident enough to communicate with different people. Some women and their families
might be homeless, socially excluded, have disabilities or be very young,
whilst others may be from certain cultural or religious backgrounds.
You will also be expect to –
Monitor And Examine Women During Pregnancy
Develop, Assess And Evaluate Individual Programmes Of Care
Identify High Risk Pregnancies
Arrange And Provide Parenting And Health Education
Provide Counselling And Advice Before And After Screening
Tests
Give Support And Advice On The Daily
Qualifications
If you have no previous experience working in healthcare, you will have to do a midwifery
degree which consist of three years. Entry requirements for a midwifery degree course
will depend on where you study. Typically, you need five GCSEs at grade C or above, plus
two A levels or higher education qualification, such as a level 3 GNVQ/GSVQ or BTEC
national diploma.
If you are already a qualified nurse, you can apply for a full time, 18 month post-
registration shortened course. You are able to carry on working while training and take a
five-year or six-year part-time course. If you come from a healthcare background, you are
likely to find your previous experience valuable for midwifery.
You will also have to be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
