, APPLICATION OF EPIDEMIOLOGY IN COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING 2

Introduction

The population of elderly patients with diabetes is rapidly growing, with significant

impact on population health and economics. Older adults with diabetes are very vulnerable

population, they are at higher risk for many complications, and require a lot of monitoring to

prevent those complications. One of the preventable complications is falls due to low levels of

blood sugars. This paper will provide a review and critique of the research conducted by E.

Waclawski, N. Cherry and A. Wagg in 2014 that investigates the effect of blood glucose testing

on falls rate at the time of falls in elderly diabetics. The purpose of this paper is to summarize

and critique the research article, review study design and findings, and consider how this

research can be integrated into community health nursing practice.

Research Summary

The study objective was to determine the pattern of blood sugar and HbA1C testing

among supportive living residents with diabetes and whether, in those with diabetes, blood

glucose measurement was done at the time of a fall (Waclawski, 2014). The study was an

observational study because the researchers did not alter or change reality and used random

sample to compare people with and without diabetes in relation to fall rates and

measurements of blood glucose levels. The study was completed in Edmonton, Alberta, using a

cross-sectional questionnaire that was distributed to directors of care of designated supportive

living (DSL) homes that are funded by Alberta Health Services, and other supportive living (SL)

homes that are not funded by Alberta Health Services. The researchers sent the questionnaire

to 71 homes, and received 60 responses – 21 from DSL and 39 from SL. In order to analyze the

results, the researchers calculated confidence intervals for rates, compared categorical factors
