Population

The selected population is the South East quadrant of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Calgary is the largest city in Alberta and the fourth largest in Canada. The city has a

population of about

1.2 million residents. More than 26% of the people in Calgary belong to a visible
minority group.

The racial and ethnic composition includes whites 67%, minority groups 30%, and

aboriginals 2.7%. Major minority groups include Blacks, Chinese, Asians, Latin

Americans, and Filipinos (Government of Alberta, 2021). In terms of age, the city has a

median age of 36.7 years, representing a high number of youths, followed by young

children of 0-13 years, and the elderly are the least in number. Calgary comprises four

quadrants: South West (SE), South East (SE), North West (NW), and North East (NE).

Regarding the population in research, a study by Megan et al. found that “substance

use disorders are among one most common types of mental illnesses experienced by

Canadians, with young people aged 14-25 years having the highest rates of substance

abuse” (Farris et al., 2020). In addition, the youths in Alberta have a higher rate of

hospitalization caused by substance abuse-related issues, with about 424 of 100,000

compared to the national average of 364 for persons aged between 11 to 25 years

(Kost, 2019). The current activity addresses substance abuse for youths in SE Calgary,

Alberta, through health promotion.

Substance abuse is one of the major issues that the youths in the south East

quadrant of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, face. Overall, it is estimated that over more than

21% of the youths in Canada struggle with substance use at some point (Farris et al.,

2020). According to the Alberta Adolescent research center (2020), more than 62% of

substance abusers are 14-25 years old.
