NURS 328

, A Canadian nutritional cohort study released in April 2017 published by The American

Journal of Clinical Nutrition entitled “Adequacy of nutritional intake from food and supplements

in a cohort of pregnant women in Quebec, Canada: the 3D Cohort Study (Design, Develop,

Discover)” by Dubois et al. attempted to shed light on the nutritional inadequacy that effects

Canadian pregnant women due to their food consumption patterns in order to add to the very

small pool of similar studies in hopes to understand the relationship between nutritional

deficiencies and pregnancy health concerns and outcomes. This is important as in order to

rectify a concern valid research must first be carried out, allowing for a meta- analysis, hence

since credible studies in this field are currently limited there is a need for it. This study selected

was an analyzation of the 3D Cohort Study (Design, Develop, Discover). The study was

conducted a cohort of 1533 pregnant women from 12 various health centres in Quebec, they

were followed from approximately 8 weeks of pregnancy up to birth. Data collection was done

mainly by self recording methods as well as professional anthropometrics recordings and

questionnaires to gain insights on the subject’s nutritional intake from diet as well as

supplements. The study took a non-experimental as no intervention was required however

results still used relied on a quantitative analysis approach while using a convenience sample

method. After carefully analyzing the various aspects of the study, a few strengths were

discovered. Some of these aspects Dubois et al. carried out eloquently, such as the use of

advanced software to sieve out any under-reporters, which is a common concern of most cohort

studies.

The study also fell short in a few significant aspects such as the sample not being a true

representation of the population and demographic of Quebec or Canada as a whole. It also

lacked the use of common scientific technology methods to track biological markers of sampled

individuals and instead, relied heavily on self reporting methods. Overall the design and

methodology could have been executed differently to yield more accurate results, though the

interpretations were consistent with the results and to other recognizable bodies of related

studies. Thus, making the critiqued report a meaningful tool for future innovative research

, design frameworks, as well as to serve as a comparative analysis.
