Some of the key beliefs about nursing embedded in Alberta's standards practices
may include the principle of patient-centered care. Nurses registered under CARNA
work under the ethics of caring for their patients. These nurses apply nursing
knowledge, skills, and judgment to assist individuals in achieving their optimal physical,
emotional, mental, and spiritual health and well-being (College of Registered Nurses of
Alberta, 2013). They assess, diagnose, and provide treatment and intervention to the
patients. Also, there is a key belief based on ethical decision- making; nurses support
decisions with evidence-based rationale (College of Registered Nurses of Alberta,
2013). They use appropriate information before making decisions to enhance patient
care. Thirdly, there is the belief in professional responsibility; the nurses are personally
responsible and accountable for their nursing practices (College of Registered Nurses
of Alberta, 2013). The nurse documents timely, accurate reports of data collection,
interpretation, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing practice.
Nurses should be responsible for their actions; practice standards in the Alberta
province have similar responsibility and accountability standards. The nurse is
accountable at all times for their actions. In Alberta, the nurse complies with the code of
ethics adopted by the council per section 133 of HPA and CARNA bylaws (College of
Registered Nurses of Alberta, 2013). I believe nurses should practice ethics by
promoting the patient's right to autonomy, privacy, and dignity. Nursing practice in one
province and another, at the same time these practices differ a lot from one another.
For instance, standards of practice in Alberta and those in Saskatchewan are more
likely to be similar in ways such as the scope of practice. Professional Ethics and
