The well-respected profession of nursing has been around for many decades and

nowadays the nursing profession has changed greatly. Since the beginning, nursing has

been a primarily female occupation taught in hospital settings, a question arises, why is

it not taught in colleges or universities? Throughout history, many nursing theorists have

tried to develop a global definition of what nursing embodies. During the era of Florence

Nightingale, the nursing philosophy focused more on environmental and nurturing

aspects rather than the scientific knowledge and evidence-based practise it has become

today. Nursing philosophies are crucial in the development of nurses as well as

experienced nurses in order to guide their practise. Alongside the nursing philosophy, a

set of aims must be established in order to provide patient care such as respecting the

code of ethics, making informed decisions, respecting one’s institution protocols and

following a holistic approach. Because nursing is so broad, many have had difficulty

classifying it, some argue that nursing is an art and some consider it as science; I argue

that nursing is not either or, I believe nursing is both a science and an art. June Kikuchi,

a registered nurse in Edmonton even believes nursing to be considered not only a

science or art but also a philosophy of nursing where it is based on the perspectives,

values and attitudes of nurses (2014, p. 46). In the subsequent paragraphs, I will

discuss my philosophy of nursing and go over some of the important theorists from the

past that have changed nursing as we see it today.
