My Philosophy of Nursing: A Caring Profession

A personal philosophy is a concept from theories that is instrumental to

understanding and practicing nursing as a science and an art. Philosophy’s distinctive

contribution comes in the education of nurses and teachers and in the development of

nursing theory and research. Since the mid nineteenth century, the development of

nursing knowledge has been expanded and influenced by theorists, starting with

Florence Nightingale. These theories have influenced, and continue to influence,

nursing education, practice and research. (Johnson & Webber, 2005).

These nurses have built the basis for modern nursing that have allowed nurses to

become a profession that is essential to today’s healthcare system. It is reasonable to

assume that each of us chooses nursing as a career because we possess some key

values and beliefs that will guide us to form a definition and primary goal of nursing.

Philosophy strongly affects the formulation of personal values which underlines all

undertakings of a nurse in the practice of his/her profession. (Meehan,T., 2012) This

paper will focus on my view and philosophy of nursing in seven parts:

1) what nursing is, 2) my primary goals, 3) is it an art or science, 4) key values

embedded in my philosophy of nursing, 5) how my philosophy affects my practice, 6)

does my practice reflect the standards of my regulatory body, and 7) how Boykin and

Schoenhofer’s Theory of Nursing as Caring relates to my practice.

Definitions are important as they are a foundation on which to base clinical

practice and educational curricula. (Scott, H. 2003). The Canadian Nurses Association

(CNA) defines the nurse as a self-regulated health-care professional who work

autonomously and in collaboration with others to enable individuals, families, groups,
