UNIT 1: WRITING PARAGRAPHS
Introduction: Paragraphs can be completely independent entities, but they are
also the core building blocks of any professional or academic essay. No matter
what, all paragraphs need a clear beginning (a topic sentence), middle
(sentences of support), and end (closing). Unit 1 will give you practice in
producing paragraphs that have all the right components.
Learning Objectives
Describe the 4 Fs of academic paragraph writing. Define the 15 common
grammatical errors in students’ writing. Apply the 4-F Test to two paragraphs of
your own creation. Demonstrate the ability to check your writing against the 15
common errors. Recognize the marking standards and practices of this
course.
Required Reading: I
n the course textbook, Acting on Words (AOW), read the following (use the
Table of Contents to find these chapters and sections): In Part 1, Section 1,
read Chapter 4: “Paragraph Skills: ‘4-F Test.’” & In Part 4, read Section 3:
“Fifteen Common Errors.”
Assignment 1: Paragraphs
You’re now ready to write two separate paragraphs, each with its own short title and
theme. Apply the 4 Fs and check your paragraphs against the 15 common errors.
Due: Preferably within the first two weeks of your course contract period
Assignment length: Two meaningful paragraphs of approximately 100–200 words each
Weight: This assignment is worth 0% of your grade for the course.
Write two meaningful paragraphs. The first paragraph should be a self-introduction. The
second paragraph should be on some aspect of your culture or community. You will
find an example of each type of paragraph in the lesson for Unit 1.
Follow these guidelines:
• Be sure that each paragraph has a topic sentence, supporting details, and
a closing sentence. Just to be sure, do the 4-F Test.
• Type both paragraphs in one Microsoft Word document.
• Double-space your paragraphs. The best way to do this is to apply automatic
double spacing to the document in Microsoft Word. If you don’t know how to
do this, Google “how to double space in Word.” Don’t hit “Enter/Return” at the
end of each line.
• Format your document according to MLA or APA style conventions. (If you
don’t know what these are, please contact your tutor and ask.)
