Assignment # 3

Summary of Diane Mooney’s “Newfoundlandese, If You Please”

In Diane Mooney's essay "Newfoundlandese, If You Please", she reveals

how one can travel to the numerous and diverse regions of Newfoundland and

hear a wide variety of linguistic differences, often making it difficult to distinguish

what is being said. She takes her readers on a descriptive journey through the

major regions of her home Province in which she effectively demonstrates that

these linguistic differences are a product of the Province's diverse descendants.

Moody believes that "…the different descendants in Newfoundland play a major

role in our dialect" (1). Further "... [the descendants] never quite lost their own

speech: they just adapted to the lives they settled into" (1). To illustrate this

Moody refers to an essay written by Baldwin “"If Black English Isn't a Language,

Then Tell Me, What Is" in which he states, "'people evolve a language'" (1). In

addition, Moody comments that Baldwin suggests “when so many different

languages are put together, they have to come up with a way to communicate

that everyone can understand” (7). Mooney’s essay takes the reader through the

various regions of Newfoundland that not only had descendants with different

dialects and languages, but also religions. Many of these differences were a

deciding factor to the descendants choosing to live in the regions they did, thus

, the various dialects that currently exist were born. (2) Mooney effectively

explains to the reader what Newfoundlandese is and establishes that whether

you are a visitor or a Newfoundlander, the various dialects along with being

notorious fast-talkers, makes it very challenging for an outsider to understand

Newfoundlandese. (3)
