Baseball: Emotion and Control
There is little doubt that today's major league baseball (MLB) athletes are celebrities
with a Hollywood like excitement around them. Every move they make is being
documented in various forms of media. This is supported in David L Andrews and
Steven J Jackson's e-book, “Sports stars: the cultural politics of sporting celebrity”,
where they discuss that "'…sport is the new Hollywood'" (Andrews). Fans of all ages
are watching the players with a magnifying glass. The players not only represent
themselves, but also their team, city and in some cases country. As such, it is important
to play the game of baseball with emotion however major league baseball players must
also be able to exercise a certain amount of control. With that, it is important that they
control their anger and rage and set a good example for all watching the sport. There
are so many MLB players with a multitude of different backgrounds and personalities
which will either help or hinder them in playing the game of baseball with both emotion
and control. Players that can effectively master playing with both emotion and control
will ultimately shine in the public and fan’s eyes.
