, Rhetorical Analysis of “The Vegan Carnivore”
In Julian Baggini’s essay, “The vegan carnivore”, he writes about the
ethical issue of in-vitro meat that was created. The meat is made in a lab from
stem cells that are taken from a live cow’s shoulder muscle (Baggini, 2013). The
author uses multiple sources to agree and disagree with the topic. The main
concerns are, is lab grown meat considered a sustainable food source for the
planet and is lab grown meat an ethical choice for those who are concerned with
animal welfare. Baggini has used pathos, ethos, and logos to convey his
message regarding the ethical dilemma with in-vitro meats.
Baginni uses the appeal of pathos, using the readers emotions, to convey
his message. He gets the readers excited for this innovative “meat”. He also
makes sure they are intrigued by this in-vitro meat. For example, “When the
lights dimmed, images of gulls flying over gentle sea waves were projected onto
two screens by the sides of the stage” (Baggini, 2013). The author uses
sentences like that to capture the audience’s attention and keep them very
intrigued to know more about the product that is being unveiled.
The author uses ethos in this essay by persuading the audience to want
to try the in-vitro meat. In the article it says, “For those who have campaigned for
a more ethical and sustainable food system, IVM is a good test of where their
values really lie: with hard-nosed ethics or soft-focus sentiment. After all, it is
hard for anyone concerned about the environment or animal welfare to disagree
with Post’s claim that ‘from an ethical view [IVM] can have only benefits”
(Baggini, 2013). The author uses wording like this to persuade anyone who has
