Compensation for Organ Donations: Is It Worth the Risk?

Globally there is a shared mindset that there is great need for organ

donations both live and deceased. Favoured consideration is to pay either

live donors or the loved family members of deceased donors for their

organs. On the surface monetary rewards for organ donations seems like a

rather obvious simple solution to the organ donation shortage. Dig a little

deeper and one will see that there are more costs associated with

providing compensation for organ donations besides the obvious monetary

ones; such as the risks to the donors, organ recipients and to society.

Margaret Somerville, the founding director of the Centre for Medicine,

Ethics and Law at McGill University points out in her The Globe and Mail

article "Paying for Organs: Can You Put a Price on Something That

Priceless?" that society should at least consider paying for organ donations

which would in return help the countless number of people who are

suffering while waiting on the long organ donation lists. The thought behind

monetary compensation for organ donations is that it would entice either
