Exam Questions & Answers 2025

Define Matter - Is composed of atoms, a substance of which all physical
objects are made . Anything that occupies space and mass ; solid, liquid ,
gas

,Terms in this set (140) Q&As

Define Atom - The smallest intact component of all matter. Basic unit of an
element that enters into a chemical combination. A chemical element is a
pure chemical substance consisting of one type of atom. Cannot be broken
down into any simpler form of matter . Ex. Hydrogen , Carbon, Oxygen ,
Iron

3 Main Subatomic Particles - Protons , Neutrons , Electrons

Atomic Number - The identity of an element The net charge of an atom is
zero. Atomic number of electrons

Mass Number - Total number of protons + neutrons in the nucleus

Isotopes - Atoms that have the same atomic number but different mass
number. Atoms with the same number of Protons, but different number of
Neutrons.

Electron Energy Level - The amount of energy required by an electron to
stay in orbit. Shells and subshells are the orbits of the electron in an atom.
Each shell can hold a maximum number of 8 electrons.

Protons - Positively Charged

Neutrons - No Charge

Electrons - Negatively Charged

Nucleus Contains - Protons and Neutrons

The Periodic Table - Consists of a number of elements . 118 elements ,
Elements arranged in vertical columns are called groups/families,
horizontal elements are called periods.

Properties - 7 rows, 18 columns. Elements in the same column have similar
physical and chemical properties. Main group elements are in the first two
and last 6 columns (1A -8A ) . The middle section is known as transition
metal elements

Metals - Chemical elements that are good conductors of both electricity and
heat. Exists as solids at room temperature. Form cations and ionic bonds
with non metals. Metals occupy the bulk of the periodic table. Most are
found on the left side and center of the periodic table. Many metals serve
as important macro-nutrients and micro-nutrients of the body

Non Metals - Poor conductors of heat and electricity when compared to
metals. Exist as solids, liquids, and gases at room temperatures. They form
acidic oxides, metals form basic oxides. Only 18 elements found on the
right side of the periodic table. Non metals make up the important
molecular compound in the building blocks of the body

Metalloids - Form a diagonal separation of metals and non metals. Have
properties of both metals and non metals , behave as semiconductors .
Can carry an electric charge under special conditions.
