● Placenta complications○ Placenta Previa: when the placenta abnormally implants in the lower segment of
the uterus near or over the cervical os instead of attaching to the fundus.
■ S/S: PAINLESS, bright red vaginal bleeding in the second or third
trimester
○ Abruptio Placenta: premature separation of the placenta from the uterus, can be
a partial or complete detachment
■ S/S: SUDDEN onset of localized uterine pain with dark red vaginal

○ Hemabate: used to reduce postpartum hemorrhaging by reducing contractions
○ Magnesium sulfate: used as a tocolytic in treatment of preeclampsia or preterm
labor
○ Methergine: increases uterine contractions which helps reduce blood loss after
the baby is delivered
○ Nubain: Opioid narcotic analgesic, used for moderate-severe pain
○ Terbutaline: delays premature labor in pregnancies between 20-34 weeks
■ Side effects: nervousness, palpitations
○ Nifedipine: calcium channel blocker, inhibits contraction of smooth muscle, used
○ to treat/delay preterm labor
