Question 1 : In its treatment of language broadly, Chapter 5 gets into questions raised
by destructive language like that of racism, sexism, and others. Because the United
States is committed both to diversity and to free speech, we are often troubled by
difficult questions about where (or whether) to draw a line on acceptable speech. In
recent years, such questions have prompted discussions about “safe spaces,” “political
correctness,” and “cancel culture,” among other concepts. In your view, should
language ever be regulated? Or should speech always be absolutely free? In either case,
why?
Considering the United States is committed to both diversity and free speech, I believe
we should have free speech. I believe we should have free speech because of many reasons.
One of the reasons I believe we should have free speech is for political reasons. Free speech
shows that our nation cares about other people’s complaints and opinions. This can also
connect with the term “cancel culture”. Politics can connect with cancel culture because if
someone running for a political position does something unethical, people will come together
and try to cancel them running for the position. I also believe that cancel culture on social
media is a benefit. I believe it is a benefit because, for example, if someone on Tik Tok is racist
then their followers will come together and cancel them for being racist.
I feel as if this could be a benefit to our world because if we did not have free speech,
we wouldn’t have the power of cancel culture. Although cancel culture could be negative in
other areas, like school or a sports team, it is a benefit overall. I also believe that having free
