Dear X,

The recent seizure of 400 illegal weapons in two collectables in Melbourne has created
security and moral concerns in Australia.

I have interviewed Melbourne residents to assess the extent of these concerns. These security
concerns are primarily associated with the acknowledgement of Melbourne as a gun city due
to youth gang crimes in the past. Additionally, the seizing of illegal prescription medicine,
cannabis, methylamphetamine and cigarettes raises worries about increased drug abuse in the
city.

Regards,

XX

, The Seizing of Hundreds of Firearms in Melbourne's Southeast Raises Security
Concerns Among Community Members

Melbourne residents and business people are concerned about the resurfacing of youth gang
violence in the city after the Dandenong police seized over 400 illegal weapons in Melbourne
Southeast in October.

On Wednesday, October 23, 2023, the Dandenong Youth Gang Team raided two collectables
shops in Boronia and Narre Warre and searched the Dandenong South factory. The police
seized weapons that included knuckle dusters, flick knives, daggers, miniature samurai
swords, axes, butterfly knives and imitation handguns. They also found 111 boxes containing
prescription medication, cannabis, methylamphetamine and illegal cigarettes. Additionally,
they seized vapes worth $461,000 and arrested a 52-year-old male at the Narre Warren
collectable shop. Speaking after the raid, Senior Sergeant Josh Milligan warned that any
individual found guilty of using or possessing a prohibited weapon could be imprisoned for
two years or face a $46,000 fine.

The community has appreciated this illegal weapons and drug seizing, but the residents and
the business people in Melbourne are concerned about the redevelopment of a gun city. These
concerns emerge primarily from the past events of gun violence in the city. A clear image of
the historical armed violence was detailed when The Age investigated how Melbourne
developed into a gun city in the article Young, Dumb and Armed. This investigation showed
that Melbourne had easy availability of guns due to theft from licensed owners and
smuggling into the country. This availability led to increased random and targeted shootings
in public places, businesses and homes. As a result, the community experienced homicide and
injuries, and the Melbourne people are afraid the weapons seized demonstrate the
redevelopment and remodelling of the crime-based city.

Speaking to Wei, a Boronia resident who heard the shots fired during the 2019 Torresdale
Drive residence incident, we learnt that the seized weapons are considered a symbol of the
continued growth of youth group crime. “This news about the seized firearms is positive as
they show the dedication of the police in ensuring our safety, but it confirms our worries that
youth gang crime is still developing." Wei added that, "Although I was not a victim in the
previous shooting, the re-emergence of crime is threatening."

In another interview, Qain Ma, a Boronia resident and parent of two teenagers, demonstrated
her worries about the risk of moral diversion of his kids. "The gangs are mainly comprised of
