1. Review classifications of burn injury depth

a. First degree- Superficial. It is localized to the epidermis, and the injury is not
life threatening.

b. Second degree- Superficial Partial-thickness. Injury from epidermis to the
superficial layer of dermis. Fluid filled blistering, nerve endings are exposed
once blisters pop causing pain. There is a loss of skin barrier function.


c. Second degree- Deep Partial-Injury from epidermis to the deep layers of the
dermis. Damage occurs to the hair follicles and glandular tissue. Patient may need
grafting.

d. Third degree & Fourth degree- Full thickness burns. This injury affects all body
systems and organs as the injury goes from epidermis to the subcutaneous layer.
Muscles, bones and interstitial tissue are damaged. There is no pain because of
the extensive nerve damage.


2. Identify the key components of caring for the client with burns in the rehabilitation phase
of recovery.
a. Pain control and national needs
