, ABSTRACT.

Green tea is the final product of Camellia sinensis plant leaves. It has gained more
renown because of the significant health benefits due to its rich content in polyphenols,
particularly, the (-)-epigallocatechin-3-0-gallate(EGCG). The EGCG are active
components biologically that exhibit many health benefits as they act as antioxidants,
antiobesity compounds and anticancer agents. The green tea catechins EGCG helps in
body weight loss by initiating thermogenesis and substrate oxidation. In addition, it
helps prevent obesity through reduction of appetite, food consumption and food
absorption in gastrointestinal system and through the changes in fat metabolism. Green
tea with the mixture of polyphenols and caffeine play an important role in weight loss
and weight maintenance. In addition to its anti-obesity and anticancer properties, it has
favorable effects on relaxation, cardiovascular protection, neuro-protection, anti-
inflammatory and anti-thrombogenic effects. Green tea has the ability to regulate the
functioning and arrest of cell cycle by activating kinase signaling pathways through
which induces apoptosis and inhibits cell growth and cell proliferation which leads to
cancer cell death. There is evidence from in vitro and in vivo studies on the underlying
mechanisms of green tea catechins and their actions. Although human studies have been
conducted they are limited and therefore further research needs to be done that also
conforms to international standards. In search of applicable articles, internet was
majorly used because of its limitless networking resources. Google scholar was also
used to locate related scholarly articles. Considering the importance of cancer and
obesity and the lack of effective, safe and long-lasting strategies to control it, it is
important to look for other effective alternatives. The paper aims to investigate the
effects green tea has on obesity and cancer.
