Equity Impact Assessment
The technology that I chose is the rising of social media and its effects on an individual’s
privacy. Social media is something that opens different parts of the world and brings people
together but the theory of personal privacy or lack thereof in social media brings up certain
ethical questions that need to be considered.
With the intense rise in the usage of social media, it sometimes seems hard to see which
group of people or area of the world it has not left an impact. Even though social media is not
very old, it has quickly and intensely spread. As with any advance made in this world, it has
impacted different groups both negatively and positively. Social media has made it easier to
discriminate against people and this is prevalent with many groups. There was a study done for
Latino men to see how social media correlates with higher levels of anxiety and depression. They
wanted to see how ethnic discrimination was affecting their mental health. They found that “Men
may be more affected by ethnic discrimination in social media because it is likely that they are
exposed to more egregious forms of racist/discriminatory content that specifically depicts
men,” (Weis, 2021). This could lead to long term consequences that could negatively affect them.
Throughout history people have been discriminated against. For either being of a certain
group or even if sympathize with them. This study also pointed out how association with a group
can lead to discrimination. “The study showed that even if the social media content didn’t
directly target a person, just the association with their ethnic/racial group was upsetting” (Weis,
2021). As a rising technology, social media continues to add to the ever-present issue of
discrimination in the world.
