This paper will discuss the criminal investigation process. In addition, data mining and its

importance, or lack thereof, in assisting law enforcement to apprehend violators.

An investigation is a meticulous, methodical inquiry or observation, a thorough

inspection, documentation of evidence, or a legal inquiry. The term investigate originates from

the Latin vestigare, signifying "to track" or "trace," a derivation closely associated with police

investigations. A criminal investigation entails the discovery, collection, preparation,

identification, and presentation of evidence to ascertain the occurrence of an event, the

commission of a crime, and the identification of the accountable party. Criminal investigation is

a reconstructive process employing deductive reasoning, a logical method wherein a conclusion

is derived from specific evidence. Investigators establish evidence that demonstrates a suspect's

guilt in an offense. The greater the evidence an inquiry produces, the more compelling the proof

of guilt. Equally significant, however, is evidence demonstrating innocence (Hess, K. (2022),

p.7).

A criminal investigation typically begins upon a police officer's direct observation of a

crime or receiving information from a citizen. Information is received at police headquarters or

central dispatch via phone, fax, email, text, radio, or direct report when an individual presents a

complaint or reports a crime. Crime information can also be reported anonymously via phone

call or text to a tip line. A police dispatcher communicates the information to a patrol officer via

radio, telephone, or mobile computer in the officer's vehicle, and the officer responds. Regardless

of how the occurrence is reported to law enforcement, this awareness or notification of a crime

initiates the investigative process and constitutes the initial phase of a criminal inquiry. The
