Respiratory (High Risk Newborn) - ANSWER-o (Airway and Breathing) -- Vulnerable to
establishing respirations
§ Assessments: Lung Sounds, Respirations (number, quality), O2 saturation (put on
foot), Color
§ Interventions: Suction, Position airway to be open, Stimulation (rub feet, jostle
around), Oxygen, Intubation and Mechanical Ventilation, Surfactant (used to promote
lung expansion and air exchange)
Cardiovascular (High Risk Newborn) - ANSWER-o (Circulation)
§ Extrauterine circulation pattern
· Ductus arteriosus, ductus venosus need to close
· Pulmonary circulation needs to manage a dramatic increase in blood flow
o Impact this: Heart Defect, Pressure in system
§ Dramatic increase in blood flow to pulmonary system
· Normal: 120-160
· Preterm babies have higher pulse
§ Decreased oxygen will speed up the heart rate
