Strategic Plan Executive Summary
Overweight and obesity remain significant public health issues facing
contemporary society. This problem is a major risk factor for a number of diseases, such as
hypertension and cardiovascular diseases such as stroke and heart disease. According to the
World Health Organization (WHO), obesity is the leading cause of death worldwide and affects
individuals of all ages. WHO defines overweight as a body mass index above 25, while
individuals with a body mass over 30 are considered obese (Jastreboff et al., 2019). Several
nations worldwide have witnessed a double and triple escalation in the prevalence of obesity
over the last three decades. This trend is driven by urbanization, the adoption of sedentary
lifestyles, and increased consumption of high-calorie processed foods. This foreshadows a
tremendous burden of chronic disease prevention in future public healthcare systems across the
world.
