Preparation
Mr. Smith is a 22-year-old man who just moved out of his father’s house to start
living together with his girlfriend in a new city. He just graduated and will start his new
job as an accountant in the same city in September. The interview is done in his new
home.
Mr. Smith experiences some issues with moving to a new city with his girlfriend.
These issues include having to leave his father and friends behind. He is most worried
about his father because Mr. Smith’s mother passed away and his father now lives
alone.
Four possible themes that could be addressed during the interview are when the
issues are experienced most, whether the issues were expected, how Mr. Smith feels
about the issues, and how Mr. Smith copes with the issues.
My first learning goal for this interview is related to summarising. The summaries
I gave during the practice interviews did not fully cover every important aspect of the
conversation. I find it difficult to remember everything that has been said in the interview
which results in an incomplete summary. For this interview, I want to give more accurate
and complete summaries. I want to achieve this goal by taking notes during the
interview and using these notes when I give a summary. I will have achieved this goal if
I gave at least one accurate summary that covers all important aspects that were
discussed prior to the summary.
My second learning goal for this interview is related to reflecting emotions. I have
barely used this skill so far, which is why I want to work on it. During the practice
interviews, I found it difficult to find the right moment to reflect emotions and, therefore,
often did not use this skill at all. For this interview, I want to use this skill more. To
achieve this, I will write down “reflect emotions” on my notepad beforehand as a
reminder for myself to use this skill. I will also try to be alert so that I notice when Mr.
Smith shows his emotions. I will have achieved this goal if I reflected Mr. Smith’s
emotions at least twice.
