Task 2

A1- Geographical Features

Greece: The most valuable geographical resource for the Greek civilization was the Mediterranean Sea.
Earlier civilizations were built on rivers and fertile farming land; however, the Greek civilization was not
as lucky. The land there was primarily rocky valleys that only allowed a few crops to grow, such as
grapes and olives. The reason the Mediterranean Sea was so important was because it allowed the
settlers to trade through the waterways. They were able to trade their olives and grapes for other staple
grains such as wheat. (Acrobatiq, 2017)

Rome: The early Roman settlers were fortunate enough to have started the civilization on very fertile
farmland. This geographical feature was one that I believe was of great importance. Early on the Romans
were able to produce staple crops such as wheat and barley, and because there were surrounded on
three sides by waterways, they were able to begin trading with neighboring developments. Rome
eventually took control of the farmlands of Sicily, North Africa, Egypt and Greece. With this much
control over fertile lands, Rome was dominating the trade markets. (Acrobatiq, 2017)

B-Cultural Characteristics

Greece: Two very prominent cultural characteristics of the Greek people were their worshiping of the
Greek Gods as their religion and theatre. First, the people of Greece had a polytheistic religion that drew
influence from Minoan and Indo-European civilizations. The focus of this religion was centered around
worshipping 12 main gods and goddesses, otherwise known as the “twelve Olympians” who battled a
fictitious battle atop Mt. Olympus. This belief system would unify the city-states and allow a temporary
halt from warfare while citizens could participate in the festivals and celebrations associated with it. The
festivals consisted of a series of Olympic games to pay tribute to the Gods. It was at these festivals filled
with games and songs that theatre emerged. Some of the Early playwrights were Sophocles, Aeschylus,
and Euripides. Early plays included themes of philosophy and the duties and roles of the people of those
times. Many of these themes are relevant even today. For this reason, I believe these are two important
cultural characteristics of the Greek civilization. (Acrobatiq, 2017)
