P3. Describe the potential effects of discriminatory practice on those who use health
or social care services.
Discrimination can be very life changing to anyone that has been affected or being affected
by it. With its different and many forms, discrimination can have various effects depending
on each individual. Those potential effects could be:
1. Loss of Self esteem/ Self worth.
Self esteem or self worth plays a big role on our daily lives. It
is how we think about ourselves and how we value ourselves
as a human being or individual living in this society. It allows
us to put our heads high up and be happy about how we are
as a person. But, for those people who are discriminated or a
subject of detrimental treatment, especially those who use
health or social care services, their self esteem might be
lowered or worst case, they may lose their self esteem.
When an individual loses their self esteem, they might think
of themselves as a lesser being than everyone around them especially to those who bully
them. They end up doubting everything that involves themselves and feel that every action
they do is wrong. They might also think that they do not deserve to live in this world because
of the harsh and violent discrimination they have received or is receiving. In addition to that,
they may shut themselves out socially to people because they feel like they do not have the
ability to engage in a conversation with another person and that people might think of
something negative about them.
An example of this is with an individual who has a mild learning disability that was bullied in
school when he was a child is in fear of communicating with other people when his parents
and carer is not around because ever since he was bullied, he lost his self esteem and is in
doubt about talking to others and he thinks he might scare them due to his condition.
2. Devalued.
Devalued, from the word itself, simply means that we are
devaluing or reducing the worth or importance of an
individual. To expand further, devaluing someone or
something means that they are being unfairly criticised or
ignored for their actions and the achievements that they
have done.
Individuals who use health and social care services that are
being discriminated can feel that they are being devalued by those who discriminate them
because it makes them think that as a person, what they do has no value to anyone and that
nobody would notice anything they do no matter how good their actions were. It makes them
feel as if that what they are doing is worthless and that it is better for them to do nothing at
all.
