AC1.2 Explain The Reasons That Certain Crimes Are
Unreported
Introduction
90% of crimes committed in the UK are reported to the police by members of the public. Only 10%
of crimes in the UK are discovered by the police. Crimes can only be investigated if discovered by
the police, or reported to them by members of the public. There are various reasons why crimes
are not reported. An example could be that a person is unaware that they are a victim or that may
be well aware they are a victim but do not report the crime for cultural reasons.
Reasons for Unreported Crime
Personal Reasons
Personal reasons are where someone does not want to report a crime for a reason such as Fear,
shame or not being affected by the crime.
Fear
The victim of the crime may be worried about reprisals (repercussions) from the offender if the
crime is reported to the police. In some cases, the victim may also be worried about repercussions
on their family members or people close to them.
Shame
The victim may be ashamed or embarrassed that the crime has happened to them. This could be
the case in rape, for example. The victim may not want to admit that the crime has happened to
them because of how they believe others will see them. As a result of this, they may not report this
crime to the police.
Disinterest
A crime may not be reported to the police because a witness to the crime is not interested. An
example of this could be someone witnessing teenagers drinking in the park. They may not be
concerned and may just think it's some kids having fun so don't end up reporting it to the police.
Not Affected
This personal reason is similar to being disinterested. A person may not be personally affected by
a certain crime which may result in a lack of feeling the need to report it. They may not care simply
because they are not affected directly.
Social and cultural reasons
Lack of Knowledge
People may not report a crime simply because they may not know the particular action in question
is against the law, this means they simply do not feel the need to report it. They also may lack the
knowledge of how to make a report or to who they should report it too.
