1. Describe the ways in which Piaget’s research applies to Jamie’s development.
1
, Piaget’s cognitive development theory purposes the idea the children develop mental
representations of the world, schemas, which they use to understand, respond to, and make
sense of situations. In this theory, Jamie has developed schemas about how people and how
certain situations will go. The unhealthy response to the assumption is that we store these
mental representations and apply them when needed.
2. Describe the ways in which Vygotsky’s research applies to Jamie’s development.
Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Perspective highlights the importance of social interactions in a child’s
cognitive development (Sigelman, De George-Walker, Cunial& Rider, 2017). Moreover, the
environment in which a child grows up will influence how they think and respond to the world.
Vygotsky also believes that learning is based on obtaining knowledge from more mature
thinkers. Considering Jamie’s environment growing up and her predisposed reactions to the
world now, I would say that her social interactions and environment have shaped the negative
ways in which she reacts to people are her emotions.
3. Identify factors that could have influenced Jamie’s physical well-being during the prenatal,
birth, and early childhood stages of development.
Genetically Jamie is already predisposed to mental illness and substance abuse since they run in
her family. However, the determining factors that could be affecting Jamie’s physical well-being
could very much rely on Judi’s prenatal health. If Judi were in active addiction, this could have
altered Jamie’s development as a fetus.
