Obedience to authority is instilled in us all from very young ages. Children are taught to

listen to adults, teachers, elders and so on, without question as to the ‘why’. Additionally, people

tend to listen to others who seem to be in higher authority than themselves (doctors, lawyers,

police). All this learning basically takes place in different situations (school, doctor’s office), but

after being taught to blindly respect authority, how does one know when it is morally acceptable

or right to not listen to authority? Can dark events in our history be explained by situationism

and our obedience to authority? These are questions researcher Stanley Milgrim sought to

answer.

Milgrim’s Research

The early 60s was a time of discovery for Social Psychologists such as Stanley Milgrim.

Milgrim’s research focused on obedience and situational variables which increased the

likelihood of obedience to authority. Milgrim and his colleagues were trying to find answers as

to why and how so many people could haphazardly go along with the genocide of a whole other

group of people (Nazis and the Jews). Many people explained away Nazi behavior based on the

assumption that Nazis were more obedient to authority, but Milgrim’s results left people

astounded!

The Experiment

Milgrim advertised for participants to help with an experiment at Yale University (male

participants only) (McLeod, 2017). Participants were selected and paired with another

‘confederate’ participant. They were given ‘learner’ and ‘teacher’ designations, but

unbeknownst to the non-confederate, the confederate was always the ‘learner’.

Learners were taken into a room and connected to a machine portraying some type of

electroshock mechanism. The teachers were placed in a separate room with a switchboard of
