and Multicultural Psychology seeks to explain the influence of people on one another. While

there are similarities between Social Psychology and Multicultural Psychology, there are also

differences. These similarities and differences have both evolved from research. Researchers

adjust their research and use different strategies depending on what they are studying, regardless

of it focusing on Social or Multicultural Psychology.

Social Psychology

The field of Social Psychology focuses on investigating how and why people influence

one another (Fiske, 2014). Things that are influenced come in the form of thoughts, feelings, and

behaviors. These things may be influenced by the presence of people, even if the presence is

implied or imagined (Fiske, 2014). There have been many researchers who have attempted to

explain this, but the one who stands out most prominently for this student is Milgram and his

studies surrounding authority and obedience.

Milgram wanted to explain how genocide could have occurred because most were

claiming they were just following their superior’s orders. He set up an experiment with a

‘confederate’ who pretended to be shocked. An authority figure would ask the participants to

increase the voltage gradually for every wrong answer they gave. The man being ‘shocked’

acted as though he were in serious pain, yet when the authority figure was in the room, most

participants carried through with the ‘shocks’ anyway. This was a controversial study, there are,

however, other ways modern (and more ethical) researchers are studying Social Psychology.

Research Strategies

There are three primary research strategies Social Psychologist employ: descriptive

research, correlation research, and experimental research (Fiske, 2014). Descriptive strategies
