Aviation has a long history in the state of Washington dating back to the beginning of the
twentieth century. Just a few years after Charles Hamilton flew the first heavier than air aircraft
the notable figure, William Boeing, took his first flight. From there, war and a new industry of
airmail began to shape the current economic concentration of aerospace in Washington state
(Washington State, 2020). Washington leads the country in the aerospace industry and is the
most competitive while the US provides half of the world’s production in aerospace. This
industry has been at its peak with a very large growth rate. (Teal Group, 2018). There are many
factors that have influenced the aerospace economic concentration in the pacific northwest and
its evolution. Competition, supply chain, and the four factors or production have influenced this
evolution and conversely the concentration impacts them as well.
Competition
Boeing trailblazed in a new industry that was set to skyrocket based on the quickly
approaching demand for air travel and even space. By beginning this journey in Washington
state, he laid the foundation on which the economic concentration would be built. The first major
demand of the new industry was quality part manufacturers which is where Boeing began. Other
new manufacturers also set up shop in Washington since that is where the business was
(Washington State, 2020). Once manufactures became concentrated in the same area it became
advantageous for any competitive aviation company to move to the same area based on part
availability and transportation. Parts coming from aviation manufacturing could be quite large
and heavy leading to high shipping costs. To stay competitive and reduce cost companies would
move to the same area (Community Attributes, 2016).
