Bioremediation is when microorganisms like microbes, bacteria, or fungidegrade
complex organic compounds into simpler ones.It is considered worldwide as the best technique
for treating hazardous waste in an environment-friendly manner and the way for our future
sustainability (Pal, 2020). When scientistswant to observe the process of bioremediation, a
chemical known as Tetrazolium is used. When microorganisms break down the oil components,
they create byproducts that react with the Tetrazolium and change the chemical's color, allowing
observers to see that breakdown is happening. The term bioremediation is essential to scientists
because it allows them to either figure out how to multiply naturally occurring microorganisms
or genetically modify bacteria to consume hazardous waste (Griggs, 2018).
This lab aims to understand how oil spills are cleaned up using a process known as
bioremediation. In order to examine the bioremediation process, the lab tech will add microbes,
oil, and chemical indicator to observe the breakdown process. There will be three different
observations that are made throughout the lab. The first will be observing if metabolism is taking
place. The second observation will be watching to see if any physical changes to the oil take
place. The last observation will include additional environmental factors and how that affects the
bioremediation of the oil.
If Tetrazolium is added into test tube two with cooking oil and Rid-X, the color should
change in the test tube. If Tetrazolium is added into test tube one with cooking oil but no
microorganisms, then the color will not change. The color will change in the test tube with the
Rid-X because when the microorganisms start breaking down the oil, they create a bi-product
that will cause the Tetrazolium to change to pink color. The other test tube does not have the
microorganism introduced into it; therefore, it will not change color.
