As Health care information and HIMS have become a staple in health care delivery, it is
fundamental to treat data with high importance and create innovative solutions to collect, analyze
and interpret data so it can be optimally used for promoting the health care industry, including
many stakeholders at different levels, in private and public health. To solidify data stewardship
between public health and clinical sectors, a comprehensive plan which includes guidelines,
steps and measures, will be proposed to make the collaboration successful and meaningful.
Whether it is clinical data or public health data, the alignment of standards, consistent
regulations across different entities and deliberate collaborations are key to promoting health
care delivery. It would create a base for standardized best practices, increased patient safety,
solid HIMS infrastructure and most significantly, effective interoperability. The American
Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) maintained that the integration of clinical and public
health data would definitely benefit the entire population health as all stake holders share the
same vision, goals and standards (O'Gurek, 2015).
In public health data, the focus is on the population as a whole. The data is used to detect
and monitor disease levels in order to identify any warning signs or alarming changes. It is also
used to track and analyze health trends and evaluate results. Furthermore, when data is readily
available and organized, it can be put to beneficial use such as making decisions regarding public
health during normal/emergency events, pandemics and overall health recommendations. It is
also used to prevent and curb developing threats in a timely manner (Public Health Data, n.d.).
On the other hand, clinical data is focused on patients individually and is directed towards data
collected at the point of care in a health care organization or in a formal clinical trial program
(Data Resources in the Health Sciences, 2019). The partnership will help fill in the gaps in data
